TOP TEN REASONS TO UPDATE YOUR WINDOWS

There are many reasons why it may be time to update your windows with new, more efficient replacement windows. Practical facts about the functions of these transparent portholes to sunlight and fresh air play in aesthetics and efficiency.

1 POOR PERFORMANCE:

Leaky and inefficient, windows are responsible for more than 25 percent of the average household’s energy bills, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Basically, if you need to prop up your window with a book or stick, it is time to replace it.

2 ENERGY EFFICIENCY:

Homeowners can reduce energy expenses by nearly 15 percent by purchasing windows with double-pane insulated glass, heat-resistant coatings, airtight frames, and/or Energy Star ratings. Companies such as Simonton Windows, produce Energy Star qualified windows.

3 CUT NOISE:

New insulated or double-pane windows with 1/4 inch to 1 inch of air between the panes will reduce the outdoor sound and clutter. Wider air spaces and thicker glass cuts noise even more.

4 DRAFTS:

Draftiness is one of the key signs that you have used up the life of your windows. Most manufacturers suggest replacing windows after 20 years. If you feel cold air coming in during the winter or warm air during the summer, your windows have little insulation value and you need to replace them with new windows such as Milgard® Windows. In addition, this means you’re paying more to heat and cool your house to compensate for the exterior air entering your home.

5 CONDENSATION:

Do your windows get fogged with condensation? If so, you may have a seal failure and need to replace the glazing or the entire window.

6 CLEANING:

For simple cleaning, choose newer windows that tilt in or open from the side. Many double-hung windows now come with tilting sashes so both interior and exterior glass surfaces can be cleaned from inside the house.

7 MAINTENANCE:

Newer weather-resistant materials will reduce your regular maintenance; vinyl windows or aluminum-clad exteriors need no painting.

8 GLASS FAILURE:

Tempered glass is required by code for certain applications, such as some window installations with low sill height. For more extreme conditions, such as coastal environments, consider laminated impact-resistant glass designed to withstand hurricane-force winds and the impact of airborne debris.

9 AESTHETICS:

You will be surprised at the myriad design possibilities in windows. Windows are available in shapes ranging from quarter rounds to ovals. Consider an arrangement of smaller windows instead of one large one, or vice versa. The options are almost endless.

10 INCREASE VALUE:

Just like any other upgrade in your home, new energy efficient windows are an important investment. New windows will inevitably help increase the resale value of your home or commercial building. Generally they can increase the resale value as much as 70% or more of the cost of the window replacement.
