4 Old Window Warning Signs

Sep 12, 2016

When you renovate a kitchen or bathroom because you want a new look or style, the process can be fun and invigorating. Windows might not be as exciting to you, but as your home ages, so do your windows. Window replacement can give your house more curb appeal and it can make a world of difference in your energy efficiency. Here are four signs that your windows are getting too old to do their job correctly.

Sign#1: The House is Drafty

Ever the best older windows will let some air and moisture into the home. But if you feel drafts on a normal basis, your windows may be to blame. Not only do drafty windows let cool breezes in when you want to keep them out, but they also let your heated and cooled air out of your home. Windows that let in a draft only get worse over time and they can become a huge problem. They might become hard to open and close and they could even crack and break. When the drafts get in, the windows are aging and may need to be upgraded.

Sign#2: The Windows are Hard to Operate

Windows that have been around for years often take excess moisture from rainstorms over the years and from the humid California air. This moisture speeds the aging process and it can cause the windows to fail in a number of ways. If your windows no longer open or close without coaxing, they are likely getting old and are on their way out.

Sign#3: Condensation

Most older windows are double and triple pane and if you can see condensation between them, that is not a good sign. Condensation is drops of moisture between the layers of the glass. That means the water is getting into the window and sticking around. It could be a sign of seal failures or sash issues or even broken insulation. All of these things lead to movement of air and water between the panes. It leaves your home vulnerable to a number of things as well and the glass does not protect your home as it used to. Some old windows can be resealed and fixed, but often it is better to replace the windows completely.

Sign#4: Energy Bill Increases

You pay your energy bill every month so you know about the normal range. If you’ve noticed your bill creeping upward at an alarming rate, your old windows might be to blame. Old windows are a good first stop and getting new windows can not only stop the bills from rising, but it can also send the costs back in the right direction for your budget to smile again.

Windows are made differently today than they were decades ago. If you have an older home with original windows, they will start to show their age. The wear and tear the windows receive is natural, but it can have adverse side effects to the look and feel of your home. Use these four signs to diagnose whether or not your windows are too old to do the job right.
